Shot in Cuba over 2 days whilst on assignment for Boat Magazine in early 2016. I was given the task of finding a man named Roberto in the far east “El Oriente” of Cuba with nothing more than a hand drawn map. Roberto is the pioneer of a surfing movement in a small fishing village in the middle of nowhere in Cuba where it is almost impossible to gain access to surfboards or materials to make them. He started riding waves as a child on boards he made from scrap wood and random materials. Since then he has managed to find some real surfboards through foreigners passing through off the beaten track and has started an unlikely surf movement in what was once just a tiny sleepy fishing village.
